6 Escaped Koton-Karfe Prison Inmates Recaptured

The Nigeria Prisons has disclosed that six prisoners who escaped from the Koton-Karfe prison in Kogi State have been recaptured.

Controller-General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, the six pre-trial detainees were recaptured with the assistance of other security agencies and local vigilante groups, and had been returned to the prison.

The CG visited the Koton-Karfe prison for on-the-spot assessment of the incident and confirmed that 13 inmates escaped from the prison on Saturday. The 13 escapees include 10 pre-trial detainees and three convicts, Prison Service spokesman, Francis Enobore told Newsmen.

The CG assured that appropriate measures were being put in place to address congestion in prisons, adding that a panel was being inaugurated to investigate the escape for necessary action.

Recall that Saturday’s jail-break followed an earlier occurrence barely two months before in Kuje prison, Abuja with the Koton Karfe prison recording its third jailbreak in three years, 2010 to 2013. The Koton-Karfe prison is known to contain some of the most hardened criminals in the middle belt region.
