Edo Governorship Election Postponed

The Independent National Electoral Commission has moved forward the gubernatorial election in Edo state which was slated for Saturday.

The election was postponed on the grounds that the security situation in the state could not sustain a mass electoral exercise, according to sources in INEC.

The Department of State Security on Wednesday strongly advised that the election not hold because of threat from “extremists” and “insurgents” hoping to disrupt the exercises.
The election will now be held in two weeks time.

Edo state governor, Adama Oshiomhole reacting to the postponement, said the elections was actually postponed because of the coronation ceremony of the Oba of Benin.

“We have a big event in Edo on September 26 which is the Oba’s coronation. Before that day, there are other events that must be done. It will not be proper to hold election during that period.”
