APC Shaken as 9 Governors Plot Exit

Nine governors under the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, are rumored to be planing an exit from the party ahead of the 2019 elections. The rumoured exit, according to a party leader, will affect the fortunes of the governing party and President Muhammadu Buhari’s future ambition in 2019.

Except the president and party leaders move fast to heal the wounds in APC, no fewer than nine governors and hundreds of party chieftains are on their way out of the party. The APC is expected to suffer more in South-West and North Central. Although the ruling party at the centre, currently controls 23 out of the 36 states of the federation, a number of governors in these states have become disenchanted with the party and the government at the centre.

Another source told our correspondent that some of the governors are reaching out to their colleagues in the Peoples Democratic Party for alliance in forming a new political platform. Newsday learnt that the cracks which developed in the APC soon after the party’s historic electoral victory last year, have continued to widen by the day due to the perceived policy of exclusion unleashed on its members from the top hierarchy of the party.

1.) Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.                                                                                                        Born on May 25, 1957, he changed the name of the state from Osun state to the state of Osun during the 2007 elections. He has proved to be a loyal friend to APC chieftain Asiwaju Tinubu and will likely take his side if it comes down to it.
2.) Akunwumi Ambode.                                                                                                             Governor of Lagos state, born June 14, 1963. He began his tenure as governor on May 29, 2015, succeeding Babatunde Fashola. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu being a former governor of Lagos state has a great relationship with Ambode and it is likely that he will show support to Tinubu if a new party is to be created.
3.) Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai.                                                                                                      Governor of Kaduna state, has been known to switch sides when it suits him. He might be one of those governors who will switch away from the APC, when something better catches his interest.
4.) Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. Born January 10, 1966, is the current governor of Sokoto state. He is likely one of those who will leave the APC if Tinubu creates another party, this is because he was formerly a member of the PDP, who exited when he felt he had seen a better platform.
