NBC Shutsdown Ekiti Broadcast Service

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Saturday ordered the immediate shut down of Ekiti Broadcasting Service.

The regulatory body indicted the station of breaching provisions of the broadcasting code.

Ayodele Fayose, governor of the state, had spoken on a programme of the service while collation of results were ongoing.

The governor had declared Kolapo Olusola, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the governorship election, accusing securities of bias.

But NBC condemned the action of the station, wondering why it allowed the governor declare results of the election when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not announced it.

“The commission has taken the decision to curb the continued breach of the Electoral Act and the Broadcasting Code on Political Broadcast,” NBC said in a statement.

“The commission is particularly irked by the unauthorised declaration of results by the state governor in the state BRoadcast station.

“This is after he went in air to make malicious and unsubstantiated comments against INEC, the Police and the SSS. The station will remain shut down until further notice.”

NBC previously, on Wednesday, handed a N500,000 fine on the Ekiti Broadcasting Service for  being “unprofessional in its activities”, particularly in the past two weeks leading to the election. The D-G said the station had not been meeting ethical standard of broadcasting in airing political activities in the state.
